Services for patients accessing AIM are found in a number of areas based at the front-end of the hospital and delivered by a multiprofessional team. The AMU is a specialised ward environment and lies at the core of AIM services. The RCP’s Future Hospital Commission describes the hospital footprint of acute medical services across five areas, termed the ‘acute care hub’:
- AMU
- short-stay ward
- ambulatory emergency care
- emergency department
- enhanced care/intensive therapy unit.
To facilitate safe and early discharge of patients, AIM also fosters and maintains robust links with primary care and community care providers.
